York Minster Armistice Centenary Event, North Yorkshire
To commemorate the centenary of the Armistice which brought World War I to an end, York Minster held a special event for 1,000 local school children. This event, on Wednesday 3rd October, marked the start of a 6 week period of remembrance and reflection which will see a program of activities and events taking place across York. War Memorials Trust were delighted to be asked to attend the event and lead an activity as part of a carousel of activities which the children were involved with during the event.
Bryn Deri Primary School, Cardiff 2018
War Memorials Trust has carried school out visits to Bryn Deri Primary School since 2013, each time working with the year 6 class whose topic in the autumn term is ‘A Child’s War’ and focuses on World War II from a child’s perspective. This year was the sixth visit to the school and means that nearly a whole generation of young people in Radyr, near Cardiff, have been educated about what war memorials are and their importance. This is quite an impressive legacy that is being created by the school who are certainly doing their part to help inspire the war memorial custodians of the future.
Whitmore Park Primary School, Coventry
This learning visit was carried out as part of a set of visits in conjunction with Historic England’s Heritage Schools Programme. The Local Heritage Education Manager for the West Midlands delivered a training session with the whole staff team at Whitmore Park Primary School about Coventry, Keresley and the First World War. The year 5 team in particular were keen to use the war memorial at St Thomas Church in Keresley as a starting point for their research on how the First World War impacted the local area. The Local Heritage Education Manager got in touch with WMT’s Learning Officer to ask if a visit to the school which incorporated a visit to the memorial was possible.
Meadowbrook Primary School, South Gloucestershire
This learning visit was carried out as part of a set of visits in conjunction with Historic England’s Heritage Schools Programme. During the summer term Meadowbrook Primary School had an Ethic of Excellent day which focused on Geography. Over the course of the day pupils would be looking at their local area using current and historical maps. They would also be given the opportunity to think about how the area might change in the future and how this would look on a map. Each year group focused on a particular element of the local area. Year 5’s focus was the local war memorial and the teachers were keen to be supported in this work. They were delighted to find out from their Local Heritage Education Manager that War Memorials Trust’s Learning Officer would be able to visit and deliver a workshop with both classes.
Denbigh Community Primary School, Tyne and Wear
This learning visit was carried out as part of a set of visits in conjunction with Historic England’s Heritage Schools Programme. The Local Heritage Education Manager for the North East had previously taken the year 6 classes from Denbigh Community Primary on a heritage walk around their local area. On this walk one of the local sites which was included was the Swan Hunter and Wigham Richardson Memorial Hall in Wallsend. The visit by War Memorials Trust’s took place on the morning of the school’s Heritage Day and gave pupils the opportunity to visit to find out more about their local heritage, visit another local memorial and find out how they could contribute to protecting and conserving their local war memorials. It also supplemented the learning which had taken place as part of their ‘Lest We Forget’ topic.
